Process Overview :

What is Carbon Arc Gouging (CAG)?

Carbon Arc Gouging (CAG) — also called Air Carbon Arc Gouging (CAC-A) — is a metal removal process where a carbon electrode creates an electric arc that melts the base metal, and a high-velocity jet of compressed air blows the molten metal away.

Unlike mechanical grinding or chipping, CAG is significantly faster, cleaner, and more efficient. It is the preferred method in heavy industry for removing defective welds, preparing weld grooves, back-gouging, and cleaning casting surfaces.

APS Genesis Series CAG machines are engineered specifically with optimised arc characteristics for gouging — delivering brute-force current output with IGBT efficiency, consuming up to 60% less power versus conventional transformer-based gouging machines.

Submerged Arc Welding is an automatic arc welding process where the arc is formed between a continuously fed wire electrode and the workpiece — entirely under a blanket of granular flux.

The flux layer shields the arc from atmosphere, eliminates spatter, and produces a clean, deep-penetration weld consistently. This makes SAW ideal for thick plates and long-seam welding where manual processes cannot match the quality or speed.

Unlike SMAW (Arc / Stick Welding) or MIG Welding, SAW requires minimal operator intervention and is best suited for semi-automatic or fully automatic production lines.

  • Open / Remove Defective Welds

Efficiently excavate faulty welds for repair or rework before re-welding.

  • Prepare Welding Grooves

Gouge bevels and grooves on thick plates for full-penetration joint preparation

  • Clean Casting Surfaces

Remove risers, gates, and surface defects from castings quickly and cleanly.

  • Cut Metal & Make Holes

Use as an alternative cutting method and for piercing holes in heavy steel sections.

Process Guide : How Carbon Arc Gouging Works — 4 Steps

1 )

Set Current

Select the required current on the remote pendant. Genesis machines allow current setting from the work area — no walking back to the machine.

2 )

Strike the Arc
Touch the carbon electrode to the metal and withdraw slightly. The IGBT inverter delivers high-current arc instantly. Hot Start aids easy arc initiation.

3)

Air Jet Blows Metal
Compressed air from the gouging torch blows the molten metal forward, creating a clean gouge channel. Arc Force keeps the arc stable throughout.

4 )

Clean & Re-Weld
The gouged surface is wire-brushed and inspected. The joint is now ready for fresh SMAWMIG, or TIG welding.

Machine Features : Advanced Features — Genesis CAG Series

  • IGBT Inverter Technology

High-frequency IGBT full-bridge inverter delivers stable, high-current arc specifically optimised for gouging — up to 60% less power vs conventional machines. Lighter and easier to transport.

  • Arc Force Control

Automatically boosts current during electrode dipping to prevent sticking, maintaining a stable and consistent gouging arc — critical for long, continuous gouge runs.

  • Hot Start

Delivers an initial surge of current at arc ignition for smooth, spatter-free arc starts — especially useful for CAG electrodes and thick base materials.

  • Remote Current Control

Operators can adjust welding / gouging current directly from the torch area via remote pendant — eliminating repeated trips to the machine and improving workflow efficiency.

  • Voltage Reduction Device (VRD)

VRD reduces open-circuit voltage to a safe level when not welding, protecting operators — a mandatory safety requirement in shipyards, confined spaces, and wet environments.

  • Multi-Layer Internal Protection

Comprehensive protection against Over Current, Input Power Fluctuations, Phase Loss, and Over Temperature — ensures reliable machine operation in the harshest industrial environments.
