Automated Column & Boom Welding System

What is it?

Column and Boom Welding Machines

A Column and Boom Welding Machine is a mechanised structure that holds and moves a welding torch along horizontal and vertical axes — enabling precise, consistent weld beads on large workpieces without manual repositioning of the operator.

Built with helical rack gear drives, variable frequency AC motors, and remote digital pendant control, APS Column & Boom systems reduce operator fatigue, improve weld repeatability, and lower production costs for shipbuilding, pressure vessel, wind tower, and structural steel fabrication.

  • Vibration-free movement for consistent weld bead quality
  • Adjustable elevation and traverse speed (0.15–1.5 m/min)
  • Compatible with MIG, TIG, and SAW welding processes
  • Digital pendant control — adjust speed without stopping the weld run
  • Motorised column rotation available on CNB4 and EHD series
  • Customisable — column height, boom length, and special mounts on request

Three Series — One for Every Application

All models feature a 3Ph AC motor with VFD, helical rack gear drive, digital pendant control, and 0.15–1.5 m/min adjustable speed on both axes.

MINI CNB Series
1×1m  →  2×2m

Compact and economical systems designed for workshops, light fabrication units, and smaller component welding. Fixed or manual rotation. No safety system required at this scale.

★ Most Popular

CNB Standard Series

Key Features Built for Precision. Designed for Productivity.

  • Helical Rack Gear Drive

Smoother, quieter operation with stronger drive force compared to standard rack gear. Less noise, less vibration, longer machine life.

  • Digital Pendant Control

Remote pendant with display lets operators set and adjust speed from a safe distance — no need to stop the weld run or approach the machine.

  • Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

3Ph AC motor with VFD enables precise travel speed control from 0.15 to 1.5 m/min on both elevation and traverse axes independently.

  • Vibration-Free Movement

Precision machined components and helical gear drives eliminate vibration during movement — critical for high-quality, defect-free weld beads on long seams.

  • Multi-Process Compatible

Supports MIG, TIG, and SAW welding processes. The EHD series is designed specifically to carry the full payload of a SAW flux hopper plus wire coil plus torch.

  • Safety Systems (CNB4+)

Built-in safety systems standard on CNB4 and all EHD models. Motorised rotation enables secure circumferential welding on tanks, vessels, and large pipes.

  • Customisable Configuration

Non-standard column height, boom length, and process-specific attachments are available on request. APS engineering team works directly with you to design the right solution.

  • ISO 9001:2015 Certified

Manufactured at our own certified facility at Valsad, Gujarat — 100% Made in India with full control over material quality, assembly, and after-sales spare parts.

Applications Industries We Serve

  • Shipbuilding & Offshore Structures

Welding large hulls, decks, and marine components with consistent, long-seam weld quality.

  • Pressure Vessels & Boilers

Accurate, defect-free welds on thick materials where weld integrity is critical to safety certification.

  • Heavy Structural Fabrication

Bridges, steel structures, and large construction projects requiring precise, repeatable long-seam welding.

  • Wind Towers & Renewable Energy

Handling tall, cylindrical weldments with precision — ideal EHD CNB application.

  • Pipes & Tank Manufacturing

Consistent circumferential welds in pipe mills and storage tank production lines with motorised rotation.

  • General Heavy Fabrication

Any fabrication environment where long, repetitive weld seams require consistent quality at speed.

Buying Guide How to Choose the Right Column & Boom Model

1)

Determine your workpiece dimensions

The maximum height and reach of your largest weldment determines the minimum column and boom size required. Add 500–800 mm clearance above the workpiece for torch access. A 3 m high workpiece needs at minimum a CNB4 (3×3 m) system.

2)

Check your payload requirements

Calculate the combined weight of your welding head, wire feeder, flux hopper (for SAW), and cable bundles. Choose a model with at least 20% more load capacity than your calculated payload. SAW setups typically require EHD CNB (200 kg).

3)

Decide on rotation type

For single-axis, straight seam welding — fixed or manual rotation is sufficient (MINI CNB series). For circumferential welding on tanks, vessels, or pipes — select motorised rotation (CNB4 and above) and pair with a Welding Rotator or Welding Positioner.

4)

Match to your welding process

SAW welding: requires EHD CNB series (heavier flux hopper + wire coil payload). MIG / TIG welding: MINI CNB or CNB standard series is typically sufficient. FCAW: CNB standard series recommended.

5)

Consider customisation

APS Welding offers customised column height, boom length, and special mounting arrangements. Contact our team for non-standard requirements — our engineering team works directly with you
